Christmas Trees
By Rodney Grubbs of Rodney's Christmas Gift Ideas
The Christmas tree is one of most recognized and accepted symbols of Christmas. The Christmas tree is the object that family and friends gather around to celebrate the Christmas season. Both Christians and non-Christians embrace the Christmas tree tradition for the Christmas season. Christmas trees have an interesting history with a mix of facts and some traditions that have been added but not known the exact source to give credit. It seems that the Christmas tree traditions can be traced back to the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden. In the middle ages, evergreen trees were decorated with red apples to celebrate the feast of Adam and Eve. From there, the Christmas tree history moves to trees outside being decorated, the trees moved indoors but undecorated, to indoor trees decorated and lit. 16th-century Germany fir trees were decorated, both indoors and out, with apples, roses, gilded candies, and colored paper. This fact made me wonder a bit, how long the families left the apples on the tree. I would guess over time the kids ate the tree decorations. It is not clear who should be credited with first decorated an indoor tree with lights. There are a number of accounts stating that Martin Luther first placed lights on a tree. He did this to share an experience with his family that he had while having a winter evening walking by evergreen trees sparkling from the starlight. Although I do believe Christmas trees are beautiful, walking in the starlight with snow and ice glistening off the trees is a truly beautiful experience. Through the 17th century, the tradition of decorated Christmas trees began to spread throughout part of Europe. In Austria & Germany during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the tops of evergreens were cut and hung upside down in a living room corner. They were decorated with apples, nuts and strips of red paper. It did take a bit of time for the Christmas tree tradition to be accepted in the United States. The first president to introduce the Christmas tree to the White House in 1856 was Franklin Pierce. The first, now famous, national Christmas Tree was lit in 1923 by President Calvin Coolidge on the White House lawn. Decorating Christmas trees is a wonderful tradition that brings families together during the holiday season.
